Medical Cannabis as a Treatment for Epilepsy

by | Apr 15, 2025 | Medical Marijuana, medical marijuana certifications

“Epilepsy is a brain disease where nerve cells don’t signal properly, which causes seizures. Seizures are uncontrolled bursts of electrical activities that change sensations, behaviors, awareness and muscle movements.” Cleveland Clinic. Although epilepsy can’t be cured, many treatment options are available. Though, approximately one-third of patients continue to experience seizures despite treatment. In recent years, medical cannabis (marijuana) has emerged as a promising alternative for managing treatment-resistant epilepsy, drawing significant interest from the medical community, patients, and caregivers alike.

Medical Cannabis

Medical cannabis refers to the use of the Cannabis sativa plant and its components, particularly cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), to treat health conditions. Unlike THC, which causes psychoactive effects, CBD is non-intoxicating and has been widely studied for its potential therapeutic benefits—especially in neurological disorders.

How Cannabis Works in Epilepsy

Cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in regulating various physiological functions, including neuronal activity. It’s believed that CBD can modulate electrical activity in the brain, reduce inflammation, and enhance the effectiveness of existing medications, thereby helping to prevent seizures.

Scientific Evidence and FDA Approval

One of the most significant breakthroughs came with the development of Epidiolex, a purified form of CBD derived from cannabis. In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Epidiolex for treating two rare and severe forms of epilepsy: Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. This approval was based on multiple clinical trials demonstrating a significant reduction in seizure frequency among patients.

Beyond these specific conditions, ongoing research is exploring the efficacy of CBD for broader types of epilepsy. However, not all forms of cannabis or CBD oils available over the counter have been studied or regulated, making medical oversight essential.

Benefits and Risks

Potential Benefits:

Reduced frequency and severity of seizures

Improved quality of life

Possible reduction in the use of multiple medications

Risks and Considerations:

Side effects such as fatigue, diarrhea, and changes in appetite

Potential interactions with other medications

The Importance of Medical Supervision

Patients considering medical cannabis for epilepsy should always consult with a neurologist or epilepsy specialist. Dosage, formulation, and drug interactions need to be carefully managed, and not all patients respond the same way. Inappropriate use or reliance on unregulated products can result in complications or reduced effectiveness of other treatments.

The use of medical cannabis for epilepsy represents a significant shift toward personalized, patient-centered care. As research advances and more data become available, there is growing optimism that cannabis-derived treatments will continue to play a crucial role in managing epilepsy—especially for those who have struggled with conventional therapies.
